Live Ethically: The Practice of Doing Good

This Week’s Intention

To align our choices and actions with the qualities we want to embody.

Spirituality isn’t only about what happens within us. It also shows up in how we live.

This week in Essential Spirituality, we’ll explore ethical living as a spiritual practice—not as a list of rules, but as an opportunity to bring our choices into greater alignment with the qualities we value. We’ll consider how acting with integrity, kindness, and awareness can change not only the lives around us, but our own experience of living.

What does it look like to let our values become visible in the way we move through the world?

This Week’s Reading

Read chapters 15-18 in Essential Spirituality: The 7 Central Practices to Awaken Heart and Mind.

Carrying It Forward

We explored ethical living as a spiritual practice—not as a set of rules to follow, but as a way of bringing our choices and actions into alignment with the qualities we want to embody. We considered how small, intentional choices can express our values and create a greater sense of integrity, connection, and purpose in our everyday lives.

Continue the Practice

Choose one quality you want to embody today.

Take a moment each morning to name a quality—perhaps kindness, honesty, patience, courage, generosity, compassion, or integrity. Then ask yourself:

“What is one small way I can let this quality become visible today?”

At the end of the day, take a breath and notice: Where did I live this quality today?

Reflection Questions

  • What qualities do I most want my choices and actions to express?

  • Where in my life are my actions already aligned with my values?

  • Where might there be a gap between what I value and how I’m living?

  • What is one small choice I could make differently this week?

Affirmation

I choose the qualities I want to embody, and I put them into practice through my words, choices, and actions.

Looking Ahead

Next Sunday, we’ll explore the practice of concentration and discover how cultivating a steadier mind can create greater clarity, presence, and peace.
