If you are just getting started in Unity some recommended books are:

  • Lessons in Truth by H. Emilie Cady
The first book published by Unity

  • Discover the Power Within You by Eric Butterworth
A classic examination of the life and teachings of Jesus from the Unity perspective

  • The Story of Unity by James Dillet Freeman
A great overview of Unity history and philosophy

  • The Five Principles by Ellen Debenport
A recently published introduction to the key teachings of Unity

Other reading suggestions, to go along with our current World Religions series include:

  • For a great introduction to the teachings of Buddha pick up a copy of The Dhammapada

  • For insight into Taoism there are many translations of Lao Tzu’s classic The Tao Te Ching available

  • Also check out The Way of Chuang Tzu edited by Thomas Merton

  • The World’s Religions by Huston Smith is a now classic overview of the world’s great religions

  • The Bhagavad Gita and The Upanishads are two of the most important Hindu scriptures. Eknath Easwaran has excellent editions of both plus a translation of The Dhammapada

  • The Essential Rumi by Coleman Barks and The Pocket Rumi by Kabir Helminski are both excellent source books for this great Sufi poet and mystic.

  • Checkout Matthew Fox’s new book Christian Mystics: 365 readings and Meditations. He was a guest on my unity.fm radio program World Spirituality on May 24, 2011.

  • Another guest, Julie Loar (on the show May 3, 2011) wrote another 365 day book – Goddesses for Every Day

  • An author I have enjoyed recently is James Martin, SJ who has written an engaging book on prayer and the spiritual life entitled The Jesuit Guide to Almost Everything – A Spirituality for Real Life. It certainly isn’t just for Jesuits.

  • Love Wins by Rob Bell is a refreshing look at the supremacy of love over judgment from a pastor in the evangelical tradition. He was recently featured on the cover of Time magazine.
