YFM Volunteers
Why Volunteer?
Our volunteer teachers in the Youth & Family Ministry department receive just as many blessings as they give!
In Unity, we teach that each person is a vessel for the abundant flow of the Universe, and can therefore be a source for sharing God’s love! When teaching the children, our volunteers not only learn Unity teachings at their most basic level; they also deepen their own spiritual understanding by exploring Truth principles in a group setting.
Just as Myrtle Fillmore, co-founder of Unity, wrote in 1893, we believe that “[our children] must quicken and unfold through the innate law of their own genius.” The children in our classes share their inner wisdom when exploring spiritual Truths in our services.
The teachers glean benefit from this wisdom, and view teaching as part of their spiritual path:
“I absolutely love teaching Sunday School. Even the very young children have an insightful concept of God that enhances my own spiritual understanding. Plus, they are all so cute! I am very grateful to be a part of the Sunday School program.”

Class: Lower Elementary
Length of Service: 2+ years“I’ve taught UCFW children of various ages and right now am working with the pre-k group. One of the things I love is the friendships I develop with these delightful young people. I love getting to know them so that we have a connection. I also love seeing how naturally the Unity principles are awakened in their little hearts. It’s clear that this is nothing outside you; it’s who we ARE, and being with them I am reminded of that over and over. Thank you for this amazing opportunity to get to know these bright lights!”

Class: Pre-K/Kindergarten
Length of Service: 2+ years“I love working with the children as they never cease to amaze me with the insight that they get from the stories that we read them. I
then learn from them as they will have picked up on something in the
story, which I did not.”-Stephanie Giboney
Class: Upper Elementary
Length of Service: 1 year
What Am I Expected to Do?
Our teachers find it easy to volunteer! Our Youth & Family Ministry staff work hard to prepare the lessons and make the services flow as smoothly as possible.
If you commit to teaching, each volunteer is paired with another teacher for two of the four Sunday’s in each month for the duration of the commitment. We have a short summertime commitment last three months (June-Aug), and a longer school year commitment lasting nine months (Sep-May).
Our teachers are emailed the lesson for that Sunday at the beginning of each week, and have time to look over the material and integrate the lesson teaching into their lives throughout the week.
All teachers arrive at 10:40 am on Sunday mornings to pray with the other teachers, and greet the children arriving early. The children are usually signed-out by 12:30 pm by their parents, and the teachers are free to enjoy fellowship in the Sanctuary building at that time.
All of the supplies are set up in the classroom ready for use, so there is no preparation work or supply gathering throughout the week. The teachers simply read the lessons ahead of time, and come prepared on Sunday to have fun with the children!
We have thorough training for all of our volunteers, so the exact duties and expectations of the commitment are clarified during our training sessions.
