Curriculum

Unity Church of Fort Worth utilizes curriculum that teaches children Unity principles in an age-appropriate manner. The lessons , either published by Unity Worldwide Ministries or written by our Youth & Family Ministry Director, helps the children to deepen their understanding of spirituality by connecting abstract ideas with concrete activities.

Nursery: Sanctuary Building, Room 110

During the 9:30 am service, our nursery provides loving care for children between the ages of six weeks and five years. During the 11:00 am service, our nursery provides loving care for children up to three years of age.

Although our nursery does not utilize a curriculum structure, the nursery environment teaches various spiritual lessons. Our trained nursery staff and volunteers provide an opportunity for the children to learn Unity Principles regarding love, peace, Unity, and each person’s innate divinity through positive interaction.

The children learn how to express their love, how to care for others, build confidence, and express their creativity through interactive play and engaging relationships with the nursery staff and other children. The positive interactions are empowering to the children, and always affirm their connection with God and their inner spirituality.

Early Childhood (Pre-K & Kindergarten): Sanctuary Building, Room 111

Our early childhood class engages our children in the Pre-Kinder and Kindergarten grades. Using the What a Wonderful World curriculum, published by Unity Worldwide Ministries, our early childhood teachers draw forth the innate spiritual wisdom from our children.

Our trained volunteers do this through the use of stories and discussion, prayer and meditation, interactive activities, and associated crafts that deepen the understanding of the lesson. All of our activities encourage the children to express their creativity and connect with God.

Lower Elementary (1st - 3rd Grade): Sunlight Center, Room 206-207

Our lower elementary class includes children in first, second, and third grades. This class facilitates connecting with God and each child’s inner Christ Spirit through engaging activities. We use varying curricula that are both published by Unity Worldwide Ministries and written by our YFM Director, Sarah Byrd.

Our lower elementary teachers assist the children in connecting with their innate spirituality through prayer and meditation techniques, spiritual stories and discussion, interactive activities, and creative expression crafts that connect the lesson topic to the concrete world.

Upper Elementary (4th - 6th Grade): Sunlight Center, Room 211

Our upper elementary class serves children in fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. We recognize the blossoming of the children’s individual identities as they begin to move into their tween years. Because of the children’s unique needs in this developmental stage, we utilize various curricula that are written specifically for this age group, focusing on integrating spiritual teachings into their every-day life.

Our teachers are trained to work with the cognitive and spiritual needs of this age group, and incorporate various learning styles by focusing on interactive activities. The children at this level use discussion, role-playing, and group activities to deepen their understanding of their spiritual identity.

Uniteens (7th & 8th Grade): Sunlight Center, Room 208

Our Uniteens class serves pre-teens in grades seventh and eighth. As the pre-teens further the development of their individual identities, we place an emphasis on life-skills and honoring the innate Christ Spirit within each person.

Our trained teachers utilize curricula that is specifically written for pre-teens and published by Unity Worldwide Ministries to serve the developmental needs of our Uniteens. This curriculum facilitates a shift from understanding the world in a concrete way to thinking more abstractly about spirituality and one’s experiences.

The lessons also focus on social skills through interactive activities that include group bonding and trust building, deepening of one’s connection with Spirit, practicing prayer and meditation techniques, and exploring everyday scenarios in which spirituality can be applied.

This group supports the pre-teens in the many changes they face in their developmental stage, and helps them to strengthen their spirituality while gaining social and leadership skills.

Our Uniteens class is considered the younger group in our Teen Ministry program, and occasionally participate in shared activities with the high school group, Y.O.U.

Youth of Unity (Y.O.U., High School): Sunlight Center, Room 209-210

Our Youth of Unity (Y.O.U.) group serves teens in grades ninth through twelfth (high school). This ministry focuses on three main areas of spiritual development; Prayer, Service, and Leadership; and is supported by a regional and international Y.O.U. body.

Prayer
In this group, teens are exposed to various world religious and spiritual practices. Through exploration of spiritual diversity, the teens are able to deepen their spiritual identity and develop a practice that works for them. The Five Unity Principles are the basis for which the teens learn about world religions, and experience various practices by connecting them back to Unity’s Truth teachings.

In addition to Unity’s Metaphysical Christianity, the teens explore sacred meditation and prayer practices from Native American, Sufi/Islam, Kabbalah/Judaism, Hindu, Buddhist, and other contemplative traditions from around the world.

Service
The teens learn about and express their understanding of the abundant flow of God’s love by practicing service within the community. The Y.O.U. teens explore the Truth principle of abundance and embody prosperity consciousness through acts of tithing their time, talents, and treasures. The act of service becomes a learning opportunity for our teen group to deepen their understanding of their own innate spirituality.

The teens also explore ideas of manifestation through studying the Law of Mind Action, which teaches that we are co-creators with God, and have the power to create our experiences. The teens share these Universal Truths with the community through service projects; locally and regionally.

Leadership
In the Y.O.U. group, the teens strengthen their leadership skills by co-creating and facilitating weekly lessons, learning how to plan and host events, organizing fundraisers and managing group finances, leading business meetings, and practicing public speaking and teaching. The emphasis on youth leadership in this group is important, as the group is considered to be “youth led, sponsor (adult) supported.”

Our teens are encouraged to express themselves and their creativity in an unconditionally loving environment that helps them explore the application of Practical Christianity and God-centered life-skills.

Events
In addition to Sunday morning services, our teens in the Y.O.U. group attend, plan, and facilitate events on the local, regional, and international levels. All events engage the teens in a Prayer, Service, and Leadership capacity, and are created and facilitated by the teens themselves. Our trained adult sponsors help to maintain the spiritual-centered boundaries that are agreed upon by all participants (teens and adults alike).

Within the church, the teens host fundraisers, overnight events, service projects, and various other Teen Ministry activities, occasionally pairing with the Uniteens group.

On the regional level, the elected teen regional officers and regional consultants plan and host weekend retreats called rallies. These occur about three times a year.

Annually, the International Youth Of Unity teen representatives and international consultant host an international rally. Representatives from each region attend this week-long event at Unity Village in Kansas City, MO.
